Dragons and Revelations - The Arnold Family have been interviewed following their claims on Dragon Zoo!

The Arnold family have been keeping their cards closely to their chest since the daughter, Lucy Arnold, first revealed on her blog the story of how she discovered a dragon in March 2006. Soon after this revelation was an even bigger surprise when the official website
Dragon-Zoo.com was picked up on google search results, revealing the possibility of a Dragon Zoo tourist attraction at the disused site of Battersea Power Station in London. Since then the general public hasn't really learnt a lot more than the information provided on the official site's FAQs page. The dragon pen cameras are still showing as coming soon and no official pictures of any real life dragons have been published due to 'legal reasons'. Now for the first time, Dragon News has an exclusive interview, not just with Lucy, but the entire Arnold family. Take a look at the fantastic new information we have uncovered on the Dragon Zoo story with our question and answer session below.
What was the inspiration behind the zoo's design? |
We didn't really have much choice in the design of the zoo to be honest! Battersea Power Station has been in London in its current four tower design since 1953. My job as architect was really to ensure that we capitilise on this fantastic landmark and see it returned to its former glory. I am very proud of the glass domed roof on the building, ever since 1989 the structure has been without its roof after the building work by John Broome fell through, so I feel that the new roof will be my greatest achievement. The rest of the zoo has been designed to ensure that the dragons have enough space and are comfortable in their zones. We also made sure that all visitors to the zoo are safe and have excellent views of the creatures. |
How did you feel when you discovered your daughter had found dragons? |
I'm still in a state of shock. I know it's been four years since the initial discovery but you would not believe how this has impacted on my life. I left my job to help the family through this difficult time, just when I thought I was getting back into a career after the children were born. Only now with the prospect of the zoo am i beginning to feel positive about the dragons. They will be a lot safer and we will have professionals to look after them and ensure they are looked after. Hopefully it will mean that I will no longer have to tend to singed skin and burnt clothes! |
Was there ever doubts that the zoo could potentially spark outrage with animal experts that say these creatures should not be caged? |
|
How do you find juggling school work now and helping out at the zoo? |
School is nearly over for me now, I'm in my final year and about to do my GCSE's in May. The last three years have flown by. I used to be pretty into my XBOX and Facebook (and I guess I still am) when I should have been doing homework, but since the dragons turned up I've been helping Lucy out all the time. I have been studying Biology especially hard lately to help me out with what I plan to do next and in a weird kind of way I guess the dragons showing up have helped me learn to study. Me and Lucy have spent hours on the internet and with old library books that Mum got us, trying to get as much info on dragons as possible. Now exams are nearly here I can't wait to finish up the school work and get straight into my career at the zoo. I've been looking into some possibilities that aren't just helping out at the gift shop! |
Where did the funding come from for this project? |
We managed to work a deal with some of the clients that I know from my current architecture firm. Having confirmed to them the existence of dragons in a quite amusing episode that occured in our living room (I won't go into details) we then had the deal drawn up almost instaneously. Battersea was sort of happenstance for us, it was almost as if the dragon picked the perfect location for itself in London. (Again, I'll leave out the specifics) Battersea Power Station presented itself as the perfect renovation project not only for my company to assist in designing but also for my clients to be seen funding. |
What was going through your mind when you realised that your friends had the other eggs? |
Spoiler alert guys! Yeah, it was kind of horrible as you may well imagine! I mean to begin with it was just me in a room with a dragon. That was my main problem, ensuring I wasn't going to be burnt alive and finding a place that I could store it safely. It wasn't until I found the remains of the rock from Snowdon that it dawned on me where the dragon had come from. From that point on there was nothing in my head but sheer blind panic and the knowledge that I was the only person in the country that could help them! I think I did pretty well in making sure none of my friends were killed or hurt though! |
What team members do you have in place to protect the public's safety from these animals? |
We currently have an advert on our website for required security department members. The staff in this team will be responisble for ensuring the safety of all of the zoo visitors aswell as the security of the zones. They will work alongside the dragon carers and vets to ensure that our animals needs are met. The main concern for the UK government is the presence of these creatures in London. They have demanded that a near military presence be on site at all times to ensure containment and security of the general public. Any discoveries of suspected dragon eggs can be reported to the zoo (contact@dragon-zoo.com) and we will respond to all queries. We feel that Dragon Zoo will be the first point of contact and ultimately end up being responsible for containing any unsecured dragons in the general public. |
Some people say that an animal that has not walked the surface of the earth for thousands of years should be left alone, how do you feel about that? |
|
What stopped you from telling everyone your sisters secret? |
There was no way I could have done that! Even if I had told anyone I knew what their reaction would be, they would have said I was crazy! So right from the start when I got attacked in my Dad's car we had a quick discussion afterwards and we knew that the dragons had to stay secret until we figured out what we could do to look after them. Now though I am enjoying telling my mates, it's just annoying that none of them have seen the real things yet. I can't wait till they do! |
What role do you play in the whole project? |
I am beginning to take an active role in just about all departments of the zoo. The hotel, restaurant, gift shop and merchandising. I also have a good head for numbers and spend a lot of time organising the accounts with the financiers. Due to my experience as a librarian I also spend a lot of time with Lucy trying to make sure the story/memoirs that she is writing actually makes some sort of sense. Having seen her blog I can see that there is still some work to do! |
Why share these dragons with the world? |
It's an important discovery and one which cannot be hidden away like it's some sort of X File. Even though there are security concerns by having the general public in the vicinity of these animals the zoo will provide a fully controlled environment. If the zoo wasn't built, the dragons would be roaming free. Which makes more sense? |
Why share these dragons with the world? |
From a family point of view it will relieve a lot of the stress that we have all been under once the whole world can see the dragons. Having to keep such a massive, stressful secret has been such a burden. It will be a great day for me when we hold our grand opening and these amazing animals will get their new homes and carers. |
Why share these dragons with the world? |
Because dragons kick ass! Because my family kick ass for being able to look after these wild animals for so long. Because Mum always tells me to share. |
Why share these dragons with the world? |
The world needs to see these animals as this is one monumental discovery. The zoo assists in containing the animals as I have mentioned, it will obviously also be used to entertain the visitors. Something which isn't mentioned a lot is the fact that the zoo will educate people about dragons. It will help us all understand a lot more about them and what they are capable of, as well as making sure that any new discoveries in the whole wide world have a home. |
Many thanks to the Arnold family, Stephen Arnold, Jenny Arnold, Lucy Arnold and Ben Arnold. Interview by Michael Spiers. |
