Five Coolest Smaug the Dragon Moments

Smaug the dragon is, beyond doubt, one of the most iconic characters in all of literature and if you're Peter Jackson on the cusp of bringing The Hobbit to the big screen, just how on earth do you meet expectations? It must have been a daunting task. Before the release of the second Hobbit film, the Desolation of Smaug, Dragon Zoo was really excited. I mean, why wouldn't we be? Dragon movies, dragon books and an epic dragon, those are three absolutely massive boxes ticked all by a single movie. With only mere glimpses of the famous dragon in the first Hobbit, the second film had a lot to provide for fans of Smaug.

Dragon Zoo looks at Smaug's top 5 best moments so far...

5. Bilbo's game of wits with Smaug the dragon - The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (2013)

Riddles in the dark between Gollum and Bilbo was a mere prequel to this epic faceoff between the gigantic dragon Smaug and the halfling Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. How does an unarmed tiny Hobbit survive such an encounter? That's the highlight of this scene. From start to end the face-off between Bilbo and the dragon has you on the edge of your seat and is the absolute highlight of the movie for both Smaug the dragon and Bilbo's characters. This is both character's defining moments, brought to life by the phenemonal acting of Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Bilbo: "Truly the tales and songs fall utterly short of your enormity, O' Smaug the stupendous."

Smaug: "Do you think flattery will keep you alive?"

From start to finish, this is the Smaug scene from Tolkien's book finally brought to life, and it's done so with such faithfulness and such finesse, it's beyond expectations. Undoubtedly Smaug's finest moment.

4. Smaug's Eye - Final Scene of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

We only saw brief glimpses of Smaug at the very beginning of The Hobbit in a prologue which - to be honest - we really weren't expecting to see Smaug the dragon at all. So considering that we were spoilt to some brief and cleverly edited glimpses of the mighty dragon within the first few minutes of the movie, it'd take something super special to beat that surprise, and did we get it! In the final moments of the first film, just as we're wrapping up ready for another 12 long months before the next installment, a small thrush flies to The Lonely Mountain and begins pecking at the cave wall. As the camera floats down deep within the mountain, our excitement builds as we see mountains of piled gold, it can only mean one thing...and then we see it, the first glimpse of Smaug's scales appearing amongst the gold, and then his eye opens.

3. "I am death..." - The final line of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (2013)

OK, so the cliff-hanger seemed to irritate a few people, especially with the agonising wait of 12 months before you get to find out what happens next, (unless you're one of those silly people that hasn't actually read the classic J.R.R Tolkien novel) but what an ending! It works really well and absolutely leaves you wanting more. Smaug has already lit up the screen, he's undergone an amazing battle of wits with Bilbo and survived the dwarves best attempts to rid him from Middle Earth, and now he's one massive, seriously peeved dragon. This last line..."I am fire... I am death!" sets the hairs on the back of your neck standing as the mighty Smaug flies towards Lake Town and the excellent Ed Sheeran kicks in to get the credits rolling.
