High School DxD

High School DxD

If you’re new to Dragon-Zoo.com lets quickly explain something. We love everything about dragons, all of the latest dragon books, dragon games, dragon movies and dragon anime we like to feature on our website, write about and review. The purpose of this article is to determine if the 2012-2013 anime series High School DxD is worth your time if you’re only watching it for some dragon action.

High School DxD is an anime action, comedy series that tells the story of Issei Hyodo, a slightly clueless character with a tendency to be a bit of a pervert (his life ambition is to own his own harem!) Unfortunately for him though, he’s ambition doesn’t look to be too likely when he’s killed on his first date. When he’s reincarnated as a devil, the battle between devils and angels for Issei is only just beginning…

So far, not a great deal to do with dragons! And you’d be right, this is definitely a funny and entertaining anime, but it certainly knows its own limits and doesn’t try anything beyond catering for basic entertainment. There’s elements of ecchi here - with plenty of pants and boobs - especially in the second series (with series 3 set to air from April 2015), but not too many dragons. Considering that this anime series was born from the light novel series written by Ichiei Ishibumi that first found publication in Fujimo Shobo’s Dragon Magazine, you’d think there’d be more dragon action.

Series 1 has a pretty slow start when it comes to establishing the story and the universe, and offers little for fans of dragon anime, but it’s when the Birth of the Breast Dragon Emperor, the second story arc of High School DxD hits that there’s more on offer for fans of dragons. This story arc covers volumes 3-6 of the light novels, with the anticipated third series of the show promising to conclude the telling of volumes 5-6 which will feature more dragon action.

In summary, for an anime series which states that dragons are “the most powerful and prominent creatures in High School DxD we’d prefer a lot less boobs and a lot more dragon action and if you’re after dragons, you’d be better off watching some of the epic action in Fairy Tail.

High School DxD is rated 7.9 on IMDB. Check out our list of top ten dragon anime for more dragon anime suggestions!
